Uttam Kshama (Supreme Forgiveness) - Card
Supreme forgiveness is the highest virtue. It means letting go of anger, pride, and revenge, even when hurt or insulted, and responding with patience, compassion, and peace. It helps purify the mind and reduces karmic bondage.
It is the first of the ten Dash Lakshan (ten supreme virtues) observed during Das Lakshan and Paryushan. Cultivating Uttam Kshama sets the tone for all other virtues and leads toward self-purification and Moksha.
- How to practice (simple guidance)
- Before reacting, pause, breathe, and choose a kind, measured response.
- If wronged, try to understand the other person’s perspective and forgive in your heart.
- Seek forgiveness for your own mistakes with Micchami Dukkadam; grant forgiveness to others freely.
- When anger rises, remind yourself: forgiveness is strength, not weakness.
- Sample line (in the Jain spirit)
Kshama veerasya bhushanam — Forgiveness is the ornament of the brave.
Both Digambar and Shwetambar traditions emphasize Uttam Kshama as the ideal form of forbearance and peace; the everyday expressions of forgiveness may vary in ritual detail but the inner intent remains the same.
May I cultivate Uttam Kshama, surrendering anger and harboring compassion for all beings.
