VARIOUS TEACHINGS IN JAIN AGAMAS RELATING TO COMMERCE AND TRADE.

    12 months ago 140

Jain Agamas lay out clear ethical guidelines for those in business and trade. Here are the core teachings you can apply in commerce, drawn from the Jain Agama tradition and later authoritative Jain explainers:

    • Right livelihood (Samyak Ajiva): Earn wealth through honest, non-harmful, and legitimate means. Avoid occupations that cause injury to living beings or violate ethical norms. This includes steering away from trades that hurt creatures, destroy nature, or deceive others.
    • Ahimsa (non-violence): Business activities should minimize harm to all living beings. This guides choices in products, production methods, packaging, and distribution.
    • Satya (truthfulness): Conduct dealings honestly. Avoid false advertising, misrepresentation, or deceit in contracts and communications.
    • Achaurya/Aparigraha (non-stealing and non-possessiveness): Do not take what is not rightfully yours; exercise restraint in wealth accumulation and avoid greedy hoarding. Respect others’ property and avoid using underhanded or coercive means to gain advantage.
    • Aparigraha (non-attachment to wealth): Moderate accumulation; use wealth to support family duties, community welfare, and charitable activities. Do not pursue ostentation beyond need.
    • Dharma of contracts and fair dealing: Keep promises, honor agreements, and resolve disputes peacefully and justly. Treat bargaining as fair and voluntary, with consideration for all parties.
    • Ethical taxation and public responsibility: Pay taxes honestly and promptly; avoid schemes that evade or manipulate obligations.
    • Compassion in wealth use: Use profits to support welfare of society, monks/nuns, and those in need; promote social harmony and ecological balance.
    • Michchhāmi Dukkaḍaṃ (forgiveness) in commerce: Cultivate a mindset of forgiveness and non-retaliation in business relations; resolve conflicts with restraint and compassion.

Notes on sources within Jain literature:

    • The above principles are grounded in the traditional Jain emphasis on Ahimsa, Satya, Asteya (non-stealing), Brahmacharya, and Aparigraha, applied to daily economic life.
    • In practice, Jain texts discuss right livelihood and ethical conduct in trade, with guidance against certain harmful occupations and exploitative practices. For example, discussions around non-violent livelihood and fair dealing are reflected across the Agama-genre writings and their commentaries.
    • For a modern synthesis focused on trade, taxation, contracts, wealth, and ethics as viewed through Jain Agamas, you can read concise summaries from trusted Jain knowledge resources.

If you want, I can map these principles to a simple checklist you can use in day-to-day business decisions.
