Śvētāmbara Jain prayer book (Prarthana Sangrah
Śvetāmbara Jain prayer book, commonly called Prarthana Sangrah, is a collection of daily prayers used in Śvetāmbara temples and homes. It gathers prayers in a sequence often used during morning/evening rituals.
What is typically included ( Śvetāmbara practice ):
- Navkar Mantra (Namokar), the universal bowing prayer to Arihants, Siddhas, Acharyas, Upadhyayas, and all monks. This forms the opening and most important part of the daily prayers.
- Chaitya Vandana (formal temple prayer), which includes:
- Mangalacharan (auspicious beginning prayer)
- Other common sutras or prayers that are recited in temples, such as Ajit Shanti Path, Tassa Uttari Karane, etc., depending on local practice.
In short, Prarthana Sangrah provides the core prayers used in Śvetāmbara worship, centered on Navkar and Chaitya Vandana, with some variation by temple or region.
Note on tradition differences:
- Śvetāmbara and Digambara communities both recite Navkar, but the exact Prarthana Sangrah texts and sequences can differ. Digambar prayer books follow their own sets of prayers; the core reverence to the Tirthankar path remains, while the wording and order may differ from Śvetāmbara practice.
