In Jainism, there have been 24 Tirthankaras in each half-cycle of time. In the current cosmic half-cycle (the avasarpini), Mahavira is the 24th Tirthankar. Therefore, before Mahavira there were 23 Tirthankaras. (There were also 24 in the previous half-cycle, utsarpini.)
