In digembar last day of paryushan

    12 months ago 60

In Digambar Jain tradition, the last day of Paryushan is Samvatsari. This is the main forgiveness day.

What happens on Samvatsari (last day):

    • Pratikraman: A special, focused confession and repentance ritual. Devotees review their thoughts, words, and deeds over the period and resolve to improve.
    • Khamatā: Asking for forgiveness from all living beings (humans, animals, plants, and even inanimate things) for any harm caused knowingly or unknowingly.
    • Forgiveness exchanges: People often say “Michhami Dukkadam” (May I offend you nothing) to friends, family, and elders, seeking reconciliation.
    • Observances: Many Digambar monks and nuns, and lay followers, perform heightened vows, prayer, and readings from Jain scriptures. Some households conduct extra prayers and charitable offerings.

    Differences to note:

    • Paryushan length: Digambar Jains commonly observe Paryushan for eight days, with Samvatsari marking the concluding day. Shwetambar Jains may observe eight to ten days, with Samvatsari still the forgiveness day, but the length can vary by community and year.
    • Ritual details can vary regionally and by family tradition, but the core is sincere repentance and forgiveness.

If you’d like, I can share a simple Samvatsari checklist or provide the exact dates for a specific year.
