Rishabhanatha (also called Adinath) is regarded as Jainism’s first Tirthankara. Tradition says he was born in Ayodhya, the city of the Ikshvaku dynasty, to King Nabhi and Queen Marudevi. The exact Gregorian date is not fixed in Jain texts; the event is placed in the earliest ages of the present cosmic cycle, far before our modern timeline. There are small differences between Digambara and Śvetāmbara traditions in certain details (such as the number of auspicious dreams of the mother and related frame stories), but the core idea remains the same: Adinath/Rishabhanatha is the first Tirthankara and the founder figure of Jain ethics and governance in the present time-cycle.
