Who are some of the most revered mathematicians from Jainism

    12 months ago 343

Here are some Jain figures who are widely revered for their contributions to mathematics and mathematical thought:

    • Mahavira (Mahavira Acharya) — 9th century. Jain mathematician known for Ganita-sāra-saṅgraha (Ganita Sara Sangraha). He wrote on many areas of mathematics, including algebra, geometry, and number theory, and is noted for distinguishing mathematics from astrology in his work. He is regarded as one of the earliest clear authorities on mathematical topics within Jain tradition.
    • Virasena (Veerasena) — 9th century. A prominent Jain scholar and mathematician who contributed to math through the Dhāvala works, which discuss topics such as logarithms and their use in calculation. He is also celebrated for his role in expanding Jain scholasticism and its scientific writings.
    • Yativṛṣabha (Yati‑ṛṣabha) — 6th century. A Jain monk and mathematician who wrote texts that engage with concepts of infinity and cosmology. His work Tiloyapannatti presents mathematical and quantitative ideas within a Jain cosmological framework.
    • Kumudendu Muni — 9th–10th century. A Digambara monk credited with Siribhoovalaya, a remarkable literary-scientific work composed in Kannada numerals that encodes information across multiple languages and disciplines, including mathematics, chemistry, astronomy, and more, using intricate cipher-like structures.
    • Mahendra Sūri — 14th century. A Jain astronomer-mathematician who wrote Yantraraja, the first Indian treatise on the astrolabe, illustrating the Jain involvement in practical astronomical-mathematical instruments.

    Notes:

    • These figures are celebrated within Jain tradition for their mathematical insight and for advancing methods used in calculations, astronomy, and the understanding of numbers.
    • There are differences in emphasis and detail between Digambara and Śvetāmbara traditions on some biographies or works, but all highlight the same core idea: Jain scholars made important, lasting contributions to mathematics within their own cosmological and philosophical framework.
