In Jainism, the karma system is traditionally described by eight main karmas (ashta-karma), which are divided into two groups:

• Ghātiyā karmas (destructive to the soul’s true nature)

1) Jñānāvaraṇīya — knowledge-obscuring karma 2) Darśanāvaraṇīya — perception-obscuring karma 3) Mohaniya — deluding karma 4) Antarāya — obstructive karma (hindering energy, charity, enjoyment)

• Aghaṭiya karmas (non-destructive to the soul’s nature, but shaping experiences in a birth)

5) Vedanīya — feeling-producing karma 6) Nāma — body-determining karma 7) Gotra — status-determining karma 8) Āyu — life-span-determining karma

Note: Both Śvetāmbara and Digambara traditions accept these eight; some explanations or sub-types may vary slightly between traditions.
