Ten facets of karma
In Jainism, the karma system is traditionally described by eight main karmas (ashta-karma), which are divided into two groups:
- Ghātiyā karmas (destructive to the soul’s true nature)
- Aghaṭiya karmas (non-destructive to the soul’s nature, but shaping experiences in a birth)
Note: Both Śvetāmbara and Digambara traditions accept these eight; some explanations or sub-types may vary slightly between traditions. The eight karma are further described in detail in Jain texts, which also list many sub-types (totaling 148 in some authorities), but the core framework remains the eight ashta-karma.
