    how to be mindful

    12 months ago 65

Mindfulness in Jainism revolves around clear perception, self-control, and living with right intention. Here are simple, practice-friendly steps grounded in Jain teachings:

    • Set a clear intention (niyama): Begin with samyak (right view) – understand what is wholesome and unwholesome. Let your aim be the well-being of all beings and your own inner balance.
    • Practice right-faith, right-knowledge, right-conduct (the three jewels in daily life):
    - Right-faith: See reality as it is, with non-violence and compassion guiding your beliefs. - Right-knowledge: Seek true understanding through study, reflection, and mindful listening. - Right-conduct: Align actions with non-violence (ahimsa), truth (satya), non-stealing (asteya), celibacy or fidelity (brahmacharya), and non-attachment (aparigraha).
    • Mindful senses (indriya-samyam): Observe what you see, hear, smell, taste, and touch without immediate reaction. Notice cravings, judgments, or impulse, and choose a response that causes the least harm.
    • Breath and body awareness: Take brief moments to pause, notice your breathing, and feel the body’s sensations. Use this to center yourself before reacting in anger, frustration, or desire.
    • Practice restraint and gentle detachment: Before reacting, ask:
    - Is this action necessary? - Will it harm others or my own growth? - Does it help me live with more calm and compassion?
    • Daily reflection (pratikraman and self-check): Regularly review your actions, thoughts, and intentions. Admit mistakes, seek forgiveness where needed, and plan for better choices tomorrow.
    • Mindful speech: Speak truthfully and kindly. Think before you speak to avoid hurt or unnecessary conflict.
    • Compassion in action: Try to perform small acts of kindness, especially toward beings who are weaker or vulnerable. Mindfulness grows when your awareness extends beyond yourself.
    • Cultivate detachment (vairagya) gradually: Notice where you cling to possessions, status, or opinions. Practice letting go of what isn’t essential for your inner peace.
    • Regular ethical discipline: Live by the five vows (for lay followers, they are often practiced to varying degrees): non-violence, truth, non-stealing, celibacy or fidelity, and non-attachment. Mindfulness deepens as these vows become daily habits.
    • End-of-day check-in: Before sleep, reflect on what you did mindfully well and where you slipped. Resolve to bring more awareness in similar situations next time.
