how to live in the moment and nowness

    12 months ago 76

living in the moment in Jainism means bringing clear awareness, non-violence, and detachment into each present moment. Here are simple, practical ideas rooted in Jain principles:

    • Clarify your view in the present
    - Develop samyak darshan (right faith) by seeing the world as it is, with non-violence and non-attachment. Let go of craving and judgment in the moment. - Cultivate samyak gyan (right knowledge) by understanding karma, the nature of the self, and the results of actions. This helps you notice what you’re doing right now and adjust.
    • Practice right conduct in daily acts
    - Follow samyak charitra (right conduct): speak truth without harming, avoid stealing, limit sensual pleasures, and practice non-violence (ahimsa) in every action you take today. - Mind your body and senses: sit calmly, breathe slowly, and observe thoughts without acting on every impulse.
    • Use daily spiritual disciplines
    - Make time for samayika (daily meditation, typically 48 minutes) to center the mind, observe thoughts, and reduce reactive habits. - Practice pratikraman (self-review and repentance) to identify moments you acted out of attachment or anger and resolve to act differently next time. - Reflect on aparigraha (non-possessiveness) to loosen grip on things and people in the present moment.
    • Cultivate inner qualities for steadiness
    - Develop upeksha (equanimity) in success or loss, praise or blame, pleasure or pain. This keeps you present without being carried away by extremes. - Foster maitri (friendliness), karuna (compassion), and mudita (sympathetic joy) for others in each moment rather than dwelling on self-centered thoughts. - Observe your mind like an outside observer. When you notice anger, attachment, or restlessness, gently redirect your attention to non-violence and harmlessness.
    • Let actions flow from awareness
    - Pause before speaking or acting. A brief breath check can prevent rash responses. - Choose non-harmful, kind choices in simple things—what you eat, how you dress, how you treat others—in the moment. - Practice gratitude for what is, including small daily blessings, which keeps you grounded in the present.
    • Integrate scriptural insight in everyday life
    - Keep in mind that karma is shaped by intentional actions. In the present moment, choose actions that reduce harm and promote peace. - Remember the goal: liberation (moksha) comes through steady, ethical living in the present, not through chasing future outcomes.

If you’d like, I can tailor these tips to your daily routine (work, study, family life) or describe a simple 7-day practice plan focused on mindfulness and non-violence.
