The Saitwal (also written Setaval/Sahitavāla) is a Digambara Jain community mainly found in Maharashtra, with communities in Karnataka and some other regions. Tradition says they originated in the Deccan from Kshatriya lineages that came to protect Jain sages and sacred places. Over time they split into two occupational sub-castes—Setavāla (cloth merchants/shopkeepers/moneylenders) and Svahitavāla (tailors)—though today the groups are often grouped together as Saitwal Jains.
