letter to God
Here is a simple Jain-friendly letter you can use as a model to address a Tirthankara or Arihant (the enlightened beings in Jainism). It emphasizes gratitude, guidance, and commitment to right conduct.
Sample letter
Dear Revered Arihant, Mahavira (or Shantinath, Parshvanath, or the Tirthankar you revere),
I bow to you with humility and seek your blessings. I am striving to walk the path of ahimsa (non-violence), satya (truth), asteya (non-stealing), brahmacharya (chastity), and aparigraha (non-attachment). Please illuminate the right path for me in moments of doubt, help me overcome anger, ego, and attachment, and grant me steadiness in my daily conduct.
Guide me to practice compassion in thoughts, words, and actions; to treat all living beings with empathy; and to cultivate clarity, self-control, and discernment. Show me how to live with simplicity, contentment, and gratitude, so that my actions bring peace to myself and to others.
If I have fallen short in any duty or caused harm through ignorance or carelessness, I humbly seek forgiveness. May I learn from my mistakes and grow in wisdom, so that I may progress on the spiritual path and strive for the welfare of all beings.
With reverence and humility, I dedicate myself to sincerely following the vows, duties, and duties of a Jain layperson (sravak/sravika) and, when possible, to supporting the welfare of others and the sangha.
Namokarāya, and may your blessings sustain me on this journey.
Your devotee
Notes for adapting:
- You can address the letter to the specific Tirthankar you admire (Mahavira, Sambhavnath, Neminath, etc.).
- If you prefer a Digambar or Shwetambar framing, you can add a short line noting the tradition you follow (e.g., “in the Digambar tradition” or “in the Shwetambar tradition”).
- You may include a specific personal resolve, such as practicing daily meditation, observing a vow more strictly, or performing a charitable act.
If you’d like, tell me which Tirthankar you want to address and any personal vows or challenges you want included, and I can tailor the letter accordingly.
