Do Jains consume tea or coffee?
Short answer: Most practicing Jains do not drink tea or coffee.
Why:
- Tea and coffee contain caffeine and other stimulants, which many Jains avoid in keeping the body and mind calm, pure, and disciplined.
- The Jain emphasis on self-control and non-violence extends to avoiding intoxicants or substances that can disturb mental clarity or spiritual focus.
- There are differences in practice between Digambar and Shwetambar communities, but the general trend among both is to steer away from tea and coffee.
Note: Some households may allow caffeine-free herbal alternatives, but traditional, stricter Jain practice tends to exclude regular tea and coffee.
