Meaning (arth) in Jain tradition:

• This line condemns those who lack compassion (karuna) for all living beings. Such people are described as cruel (nerday) and thoughtlessly ready to harm others. It is a confession of recognizing one’s own lack of mercy and the resulting tendency to cause harm, and a resolve to cultivate compassion and non-violence.

• Alochana Path has small textual variations between Digambar and Shwetambar communities. The essential theme remains the same: acknowledging faults, especially the absence of karuna, and renewing the vow to practice compassion and harmless conduct.
