Where is Ashtapad Tirth ?

Ashtapad Tirth is a very ancient and revered Jain site. Traditionally, it is said to be the place where the first Tirthankar, Rishabhdev (Adinath), attained nirvana, described as a mountain with eight steps leading to a gem-filled palace.

• Most widely accepted traditional belief places Ashtapad in the Himalayas, near Mount Kailash in the Tibet region. It is often treated as a “lost” or symbolic tirth because no verified physical location has been found or accessible. You’ll see this described as the historic identification of Ashtapad with Kailash-Mansarovar, though there is no conclusive archaeological proof.

• In modern times, there are dedicated temples and tirths named after Ashtapad in India, built as replicas or commemorations. For example, Hastinapur has an Ashtapad Teerth, and Hatpiplya (Madhya Pradesh) has Shri Ashtapad Jain Tirth.
