milk
In Jainism, the consumption of milk and milk products is a topic of ethical consideration. Traditional Jain teachings permit the use of milk, provided it is obtained without causing harm or violence (himsa) to the cow or any living being. However, many contemporary Jains, especially those following stricter interpretations of ahimsa (non-violence), choose to avoid milk and dairy products due to concerns about modern dairy practices, which often involve harm to animals.
The core principle is ahimsa, and any food that involves violence or exploitation of sentient beings is discouraged. Therefore, strict Jains may follow a vegan diet, abstaining from milk, while others may consume it if they believe it is sourced without harm.
It is always encouraged within Jainism to reflect on the origins of one's food and to minimize harm to all living beings as much as possible.
