    which are the 5 paap

    one year ago 1034

In Jainism, the term "paap" refers to sinful activities or actions that lead to the accumulation of karmic bondage and hinder the progress of the soul toward liberation (moksha). Among various classifications of sinful activities, Jain scriptures commonly emphasize the following five main paaps, often referred to as the five great sins or "Panch Mahapap":

    1. Violence (Himsa) – Causing harm or injury to living beings.
    2. Falsehood (Asatya) – Speaking lies or engaging in falsehood.
    3. Stealing (Adattadana or Chaurya) – Taking anything that is not rightfully given.
    4. Sexual Misconduct (Maithuna or Abrahmacharya) – Indulging in unchaste or inappropriate sexual conduct.
    5. Possessiveness (Parigraha or Aparigraha) – Attachment to material possessions beyond one's needs.

These five major paaps are to be avoided by all Jains, and especially strictly by those who have taken higher vows (Mahavratas) such as monks and nuns. For laypeople (Shravakas and Shravikas), the vows are observed at a less strict level (Anuvratas). Avoiding these five paaps is essential for spiritual purification and progress on the path to liberation according to Jain philosophy.
