Malani jain 's Gotta
Gotra (gatta/gotra) in Jainism is a social lineage label used mainly for lay Jains to mark ancestral lines and to guide exogamy (marrying outside one’s own gotra). The idea of 84 gotras (chourasi gotra) is common among Śvetāmbara communities (like Oswal/Porwal groups) and helps families identify permissible marriage alliances. Different Jain communities may have slightly different lists of gotras, and some names can vary by sub-group. Digambar and Śvetāmbara traditions both emphasize spiritual progress over birth-based status, but gotra usage is more a social-cum-marital convention than a spiritual criterion.
