Gotra (gatta/gotra) in Jainism is a social lineage label used mainly for lay Jains to mark ancestral lines and to guide exogamy (marrying outside one’s own gotra). The idea of 84 gotras (chourasi gotra) is common among Śvetāmbara communities (like Oswal/Porwal groups) and helps families identify permissible marriage alliances.
