In Jain tradition, there are two main sects: Digambara and Śvetāmbara. Both claim to be ancient, but there is a difference in who considers which to be older:

• Digambara viewpoint: Digambaras say they are the original, oldest tradition of Mahavira and that Śvetāmbaras branched off later. They trace the roots back to the early austerities of the Jain order and Mahavira’s own time in spirit, with later developments by Śvetāmbara scholars. In short, Digambara is viewed as the older lineage within their tradition.

• Śvetāmbara viewpoint: Śvetāmbaras argue that they are the original tradition and that the Digambaras emerged later, around the early centuries of the Common Era, after disagreements and splits within the Jain sangha.

Because this is a historical/sectarian topic, the two sides differ on the exact timeline, and there isn’t a single universally accepted date. The important point is that both sects consider themselves authentic and trace their own lineage back to Mahavira, with the splits happening in the early centuries of the common era.
