Main pillars of jain religion
The main pillars of Jain religion are known as the "Five Great Vows" (Panch Mahavrata) for monks and "Five Lesser Vows" (Anuvrata) for laypeople. These are:
- Ahimsa (Non-violence): Absolute non-violence in thought, word, and deed towards all living beings.
- Satya (Truthfulness): Always speaking the truth.
- Asteya (Non-stealing): Not taking anything that is not willingly given.
- Brahmacharya (Celibacy or Chastity): For monks, complete celibacy; for laypeople, fidelity to one’s spouse.
- Aparigraha (Non-possessiveness): Detachment from people, places, and material things.
These vows form the ethical foundation of Jainism and guide the spiritual and daily conduct of its followers.
