    Simandhara Swami meditation

    11 months ago 62

Simandhar Swami (also spelled Simandhara Swami) is revered in certain Jain traditions as a living Tirthankar who currently resides in a distant part of the Jain cosmos. In Digambar tradition, he is believed to be the twenty-fourth Tirthankar of a future age who is accessible for meditation and prayers by present-day Jains. The Shwetambar view may place different emphasis on the idea of living Tirthankars in distant realms, so there are differences between traditions.

A simple meditation to connect with the qualities of Simandhar Swami (or to cultivate similar virtues) can be done as follows:

    • Preparation: Sit comfortably in a clean place, spine erect, shoulders relaxed. Let your breath settle for a few moments.
    • Prostration and intention: Silently bow to all arihants, siddhas, and to Simandhar Swami in your tradition. Reconfirm your intention to cultivate detachment (vairagya), truthfulness (satya), non-violence (ahimsa), and inner peace.
    • Breath and awareness: Breathe slowly for 6–10 cycles. With each exhale, let go of a swirling thought or attachment. With each inhale, imagine drawing in purity, calm, and steadfastness.
    • Visualization (optional): In your mind’s eye, picture Simandhar Swami’s qualities—omniscience, compassion, and boundless equanimity. See yourself responding to life’s situations with calm, non-violence, and ethical conduct.
    • Reflection on virtues: Reflect on key Jain virtues that Simandhar Swami embodies—non-violence, truth, non-attachment, self-discipline. Consider small daily ways you can embody these in your actions, speech, and thoughts.
    • Mantra or verses (if you have a preferred Jain prayer): You may softly repeat a familiar Jain mantra such as Namokaras (Navkar Mani) or another bhavna (meditative reflection) from your tradition, keeping the mind steady and focused on virtuous conduct.
    • Closing: Offer gratitude for the opportunity to practice, and dedicate the merit of your meditation to the well-being of all sentient beings and to the progress on the path toward liberation.

    Notes:

    • In Digambar literature, Simandhar Swami is presented as a living, enlightened being who inspires current practitioners. In Shwetambar sources, there may be different emphases or interpretations about the idea of living Tirthankars in distant realms. Both traditions value the cultivation of self-discipline, ethical conduct, and inner purification through meditation.
    • The core purpose of meditating on Simandhar Swami is not worship of a distant figure per se, but to cultivate the same qualities—non-violence, truth, restraint, compassion, and unshakeable equanimity—that a Tirthankar embodies.

If you’d like, I can share a brief, traditional bhavna (meditation reflection) in words commonly used in Jain practice, or point you to a specific JainKnowledge resource that discusses Simandhar Swami from the Digambar/Shwetambar perspectives.
