Can we eat food at sunset
In Jain Dharma there isn’t a universal rule that forbids eating after sunset. Practices about meal times vary by tradition and by one’s role (layperson vs. monk/nun).
- For many lay Jains, meals are taken during the day and the last meal is often completed before sunset as a common practice, but this is a practical guideline rather than a strict canonical rule.
- Some strict practitioners or certain local communities may choose to stop eating before night for reasons of reducing harm to small creatures that become active after dark. Others may continue to eat after sunset without issue.
- Monastic codes (which differ between Digambar and Śvetāmbar traditions) have their own specific rules about eating times, often more stringent than those for lay followers.
If you’re unsure what is appropriate for you, its best to check with your local Jain guru, center, or community tradition to follow the guideline your group observes.
