At what time should we sleep and at what time we should wake up

    11 months ago 139

In Jainism, the emphasis is on a steady, disciplined dincharya (daily routine) rather than fixed clock times. The general guidance is:

    • Wake up: Try to rise before sunrise, ideally in the Brahma-muhurta window (early morning, roughly around 4:00–6:00 am, depending on the season). This is considered a calm, pure time for meditation, study, and spiritual practices.
    • Sleep: Aim to go to bed after sunset and avoid staying up late. Sleep should come relatively early in the evening, so you have a restful night and wake refreshed for the morning practices.

    Notes:

    • Exact clock times vary with the season and your local sunrise/sunset times. In winter the sun rises later; in summer it rises earlier, so your wake time shifts accordingly.
    • For lay practitioners the emphasis is on maintaining regularity, simplicity, and avoiding late-night activity or eating after evening.

There are no rigid universal times dictated in the scriptures; both Digambar and Shwetambar traditions encourage early rising and early retiring as part of a balanced, non-harmful lifestyle. If you want, I can point to specific Jain texts or practices that discuss daily routines in more detail.
