Why jain community was made?
Jain community (Sangha) was formed to help people follow the path of Jain dharma together, with mutual support and shared discipline. Its main purposes are:
- To preserve and spread the teachings of the Tirthankaras (like Mahavira) so that more people can learn and practice ahimsa (non-violence), aparigraha (non-attachment), and satya (truth).
- To provide a structure for ascetic and lay practices, so monks, nuns, and lay followers can support each other in renunciation, study, and ethical conduct.
- To nurture education, charity, and community welfare, helping families and individuals live virtuous lives in line with Jain principles.
- To keep Jain traditions, rituals, and languages alive across generations and geographies, while allowing different communities (notably Digambar and Śvetāmbar) to interpret and practice according to their own traditions.
In short, the Jain community exists to sustain the practice of non-violence and spiritual discipline in a cohesive, supportive environment that helps people progress on the path to liberation.
