What is chaityavandan
Chaityavandan (chaityavandan vidhi) is a daily temple-ward veneration performed by many Shvetambar Murtipujak Jains. It means the reverent worship or “vandana” of the chaitya (temple/arena) and the Tirthankaras and Siddhas. The practice helps purify conduct, cultivate humility, devotion, and mindfulness, and is often done once or twice daily around temple visits, after cleansing and in clean attire. In this liturgy, devotees begin with preparation, enter a calm state, perform circumambulations and prostrations, and recite a sequence of prayers and sutras such as Navkar (Namokar) Mantra, prayers to Tirthankaras/Siddhas, and forgiveness/compassion sections. The exact sequence can vary by gaccha and temple. Digambar and Shvetambar traditions differ in how chaityavandan is practiced; many Digambar temples do not have a fixed “Chaityavandan” liturgy in front of idols and instead emphasize other forms of worship, while Shvetambar Murtipujak temples commonly follow the chaityavandan sequence.
