Can Jains eat chips
In Jainism, whether Jains can eat chips depends on personal vow and sect rules.
- Most strict Jains avoid root vegetables (like potatoes) because uprooting the plant harms many life-forms and the potato is seen as a living part of the plant. So potato chips are generally not suitable for strict Jains.
- Some Jains may eat non-root chips (e.g., corn chips) if no root vegetables, garlic, onion, or other prohibited items are used. Practices can vary between Digambar and Shwetambar communities and from family to family.
- When in doubt, choose foods clearly prepared without root vegetables and without onions/garlic, or look for Jain-labeled options and ask about ingredients.
