    what is anuprekshe in swadhyay

    11 months ago 101

Anupreksha (also called Bhavana) are the twelve reflections a Jain practitioner repeats during Swadhyay (self‑study) to train the mind toward detachment and right vision.

The twelve Anuprekshas are: 1) Anitya Bhavna – the world and everything in it is impermanent. 2) Asarana Bhavna – there is no real refuge in worldly things; true refuge is the purified self. 3) Samsara Bhavna – the cycle of birth and death is filled with suffering. 4) Ekatva Bhavna – I am alone responsible for my actions; I am the doer and the enjoyer of their results. 5) Anyatva Bhavna – the body, relations, and possessions are different from the soul. 6) Asuchi Bhavna – the body is impure by nature. 7) Asrava Bhavna – karmic inflow comes through passions and actions. 8) Samvara Bhavna – stopping the inflow of karma is essential. 9) Nirjara Bhavna – shedding and purifying karma already bound to the soul. 10) Loka Bhavna – the universe and its vastness show the soul’s relative smallness. 11) Bodhi-durlabha Bhavna – right faith, right knowledge, and right conduct are hard to attain. 12) Dharma Bhavna – the true nature of the path and its principles.

These reflect ideas stay constant across Digambar and Shwetambar traditions; wording may vary slightly, but the essential meanings are the same and are used to support steady, detachment-focused practice during Swadhyay.
