what the kal of sweet in chaumasa

    one year ago 165

In Jainism, especially during Chaumasa (the four-month monsoon period), there are specific dietary restrictions observed by many devout Jains. One common restriction is regarding the consumption of sweets.

"Kal" in this context refers to the prescribed period or allowable time after which a particular food item, such as a sweet, should not be consumed. For sweets made with ingredients like milk or those which are perishable, Jain scriptures and tradition specify that they should be consumed within a limited timeframe to avoid the growth of microorganisms, which increases during the monsoon.

Typical Kal for Sweets in Chaumasa:

    • Most fresh, moist sweets (especially those made with milk or ghee) should be consumed within 3 hours (1 Prahar) after preparation.
    • Some dry sweets may have a slightly longer duration, but during Chaumasa, stricter rules are often followed.
    • After this "kal" or time limit, the sweet is considered "Vehee" (stale) and should not be eaten.

This practice aligns with the Jain principle of Ahimsa (non-violence), as eating old food increases the risk of consuming living microorganisms, which multiplies more rapidly during monsoon.

Summary: During Chaumasa, the "kal" (allowable time) for consuming sweets—especially moist or milk-based ones—is typically limited to 3 hours after preparation. After this period, they should not be consumed according to Jain dietary rules.
