Upadhyāya is a title meaning “preceptor/teacher” in Jainism. It is a rank given to a monk or scholar who teaches the Jain scriptures (the Anga and Purva) and guides junior monks and nuns. It is not a single fixed person’s name; many learned Sadhus can hold this title in different tirthas and communities. In Digambar and Śvetāmbara lineages, Upadhyāya is traditionally placed below the Acārya in the hierarchy, and the exact duties and importance can vary by tradition. A well-known example from the Śvetāmbara tradition is the honorific Mahopādhyāya used for senior Upadhyāyas like Yashovijaya.
