    Nigoda in jain

    11 months ago 127

Nigod ( Nigoda, nigod jeva) is the Jain cosmology term for the lowest, most primitive form of life in the soul-world hierarchy.

    • What it is: Nigods are minute beings with extremely limited consciousness and usually understood to have only one sense (touch). They are described as numerous, often existing in clusters, and bound by heavy karma. They represent the very bottom of the transmigration system and are found in various forms, including those associated with plant and microbe life. Their condition illustrates how vast and diverse the soul-world is, and why non-violence (ahimsa) toward all forms of life is important. In both major Jain traditions (Digambara and Śvetāmbara), the basic idea remains the same, though discussions may differ in emphasis or terminology.
    • Two kinds mentioned in some texts: nitya-nigod (souls that have always remained nigod) and itara-nigod (souls that have fallen into nigod from higher forms).
    • Spiritual implication: The nigod state highlights that liberation (moksha) is possible for every soul, but many souls remain for inconceivably long times in nigod due to karma. Progress toward higher birth and eventual liberation comes through right faith, right knowledge, and right conduct, under the guidance of awakened teachers and the karmic law that governs all souls.
    • Practical takeaway: Jain ethics extend even to the tiniest beings; avoiding harm to micro-life and practicing compassion are part of the path for all beings, including nigods.

If you want, I can summarize a specific Jain scripture that mentions nigod concepts in more detail, and explain how Digambar and Śvetāmbara views compare on this topic.
