    Vijaydashmi in Jain context

    11 months ago 33

Vijaydashmi is not a primary Jain festival. In Jain practice, the days around Dashami are tied to two main observances, which differ by tradition:

    • Shvetambar (Swetambar) tradition: Paryushan ends with Samvatsari, the Forgiveness Day, on the last day of the eight-day fast. On Samvatsari, Jains seek and grant forgiveness (Micchami Dukkadam) after performing pratikraman. This is the central Dashami-associated event for Shvetambar Jains. ( en.wikipedia.org)
    • Digambar (Digambar) tradition: The Das Lakshan Parva (Das Lakshan Dharma) is the ten-day observance that ends on Anant Chaturdashi, with practices of penance and self-purification. Some people may refer to the concluding day as a “Vijaydashmi” in a loose sense, but it is not the standard name used in Jain scriptures for a separate festival. The Digambar end-day emphasizes forgiveness and renewal, similar in spirit to the Shvetambar Samvatsari. ( jainknowledge.com)

In short, Vijaydashmi as a standalone Jain festival does not appear in classic Jain calendars. The meaningful Dashami-related events are Samvatsari (Shvetambar) and Das Lakshan Parva (Digambar), both focused on inner victory over passions through forgiveness, self-purification, and penance.
