    Rijusutra-naya: in detail

    11 months ago 70

Rijusutra-naya (also spelled Rijusutra naya) is one of the seven nayas (points of view) used in Jain logic to understand a real object from a specific, present-time perspective.

    What Rijusutra-naya means

    • It is the straight or present-time view. It focuses only on the current (present) gross mode of an object, not its past or future states.
    • In this view, only the present moment or current state is taken as the object of knowledge.

How it fits with the other nayas

    • The seven nayas together give a fuller, non-dogmatic picture of reality. Each naya shows one facet, and when used together they help avoid error or clash between different viewpoints.
    • The seven nayas are: Naigama-naya (universal/common view), Samgraha-naya (generic/class view), Vyavahara-naya (pragmatic view), Rijusutra-naya (present/moment view), Sabda-naya (verbal view), Samabhirudha-naya (etymological/precise-word view), Evambhuta-naya (actuality/real-itself view).

    Key idea to remember

    • Rijusutra-naya does not deny past or future; it simply limits its focus to the current, present state of the object.

    Example

    • If a pot is wet right now, Rijusutra-naya would describe only the current wetness, not any previous dryness or future dryness/wetness.

    Differences between Digambar and Shwetambar

    • Both traditions acknowledge the Rijusutra-naya and other nayas, and the core meanings are the same. Commentaries or phrasing may differ slightly, but the substance of Rijusutra-naya remains the same in both.
