Mohaniya Karma (deluding karma) lakṣaṇa and how to overcome

    • What Mohaniya Karma is
    - It is the deluding or intoxicating karma that confuses the soul, leading to attachment (raga) and aversion (dveṣa) and distorting right faith and right conduct. It is regarded as the most dangerous because it obstructs both jñā (knowledge) and dharma (conduct). ( jainknowledge.com)
    • Two broad divisions (darśan-mohaniya and caryā-mohaniya)
    - Darśan-mohaniya (belief-deluding): disturbs right faith (samyaktva). It includes forms that mislead what we understand as true knowledge or belief. - Caryā-mohaniya (conduct-deluding): disturbs right conduct by exciting passions and feelings that pull us away from virtuous behavior. - Both divisions are commonly described as having 28 sub-types in total (see below). ( jainknowledge.com)
    • The 28 sub-types (two groups)
    - Kashāya Mohaniya (passion-deluding): 16 types, tied to the four main passions - Anger (krodha), Pride (mana), Deceit (maya), Greed (lobha) - Each of the four has four intensities: - Anantanubandhi (eternally binding) - Apratyakhyāni (non-renunciation hindering) - Pratyakhyāni (hindering with partial renunciation) - Sañjvalana (flaming up) - This makes 16 forms of passion-deluding Mohaniya Karma. - Nokāśaya Mohaniya (non-passion deluding): 9 types - Hasya (laughter-deluding) - Rati (attraction-deluding) - Arati (aversion/repulsion-deluding) - Shoka (sorrow-deluding) - Bhaya (fear-deluding) - Jugupsa (disgust-deluding) - Purusha Ved (masculine-deluding) - Stree Ved (feminine-deluding) - Napuṁsak Ved (neuter-deluding) - In total, Mohaniya Karma comprises 28 varieties, and its active influence makes it hard for the soul to remain in or progress toward right faith and right conduct. ( jainknowledge.com)
    • The effects and why it matters
    - While Mohaniya Karma is active, the soul cannot stay firmly in samyak darśan (right faith) or pure caritra (right conduct). Destroying Darśan-mohaniya gives stable right faith, and ending Caryā-mohaniya removes impediments to pure conduct, paving the way toward kevala jñāna. ( jainknowledge.com)
    • How to weaken or overcome Mohaniya Karma (practice-based path)
    - Cultivate: - Samyak darśan (right faith) through study, reflection, and truthful perception - Svādhyāya and anuprekṣā (self-study, contemplation) - Vratā and guptī (vows and restraints), along with samiti (self-control) - Kṣamā and vinaya (forgiveness and humility) - Dhyāna (meditation) and pratikraman (confession and repentance) - These practices gradually weaken the grip of Mohaniya Karma, support the decline of passions (kashaya) and subsidiary passions (nokashaya), and move the soul toward Vitarāgatva (free from bondage) and eventually kevala jñāna. ( jainknowledge.com)
    • About tradition and interpretation
    - Both Digambar and Śvetāmbara traditions accept Mohaniya Karma with the same basic divisions and 28 sub-types; wording may vary slightly, but the essential understanding is the same. ( jainknowledge.com)
    • Simple takeaway
    - Mohaniya Karma is the chief deluder that clouds belief and conduct. By steady practice of right faith, study, vows, forgiveness, and meditation, one weakens its hold and travels toward liberation.
