what is leshya?
Leshya (leśyā) is a Jain idea that describes the “color” or state of the soul as it is influenced by thoughts, emotions, and actions. This color shows how much karma binds the soul and how far a person is from spiritual perfection. The aim is to purify the soul of these colors.
Key points:
- There are six leshyas, arranged from dark to light: Krishna (black), Neel (blue), Kapot (gray), Tejo (fiery red), Padma (yellow), and Shukla (white).
- The first three colors (black, blue, gray) are considered inauspicious and relate to more negative states; the last three (red, yellow, white) are auspicious and relate to more virtuous states.
- The famous teaching uses two parables (the tree and the robbers) to illustrate how a person’s leśyā colors reflect their attitude and how they approach life and harm or welfare.
- Both Digambar and Śvetāmbara traditions accept the concept of leśyā; the exact descriptions are consistent across these traditions.
