I am referring to Malinath bhagwan , she is considered female before attaining moksha in many Jain traditions , like sthanakvasi and Terapanth
Mallinath Bhagwan (Mallinath/Malli) is the 19th Tirthankar. There is a sectarian difference about his/her gender in this era:
- Śvetāmbara tradition (including many Terapanth and some Sthanakvasi contexts): Mallinath is described as female in this time cycle. This is recognized in their biographical accounts and their devotion of Malli as Mallīnātha (Mallī Devī). You can read more about this viewpoint here .
- Digambara tradition: Mallinath is depicted as male, since they hold that all Tirthankaras are male. You can read more about the situation of Mallinath across traditions here .
Across both traditions, the essential spiritual message remains the same: Mallinath, as a Tirthankar, embodies the path of right perception, right knowledge, and right conduct, and ultimately attains kevalajñāna and moksha. The gender of the physical body is considered temporary; the soul’s perfection and liberation are the core reality.
