What are the varnas in jainism? Can you list them, please?
- Jain texts talk about four varnas based on livelihood, not on spiritual worth:
- Brahmin
- Kshatriya
- Vaishya
- Shudra
- In Jainism there is said to be only one jati (humans), and varnas arise from people’s professions rather than birth. The idea that these four varnas were established in ancient times is connected to Bharata’s legend, not to a rigid caste system in Jain practice. Both Digambara and Śvetāmbara traditions recognize the varna concept, though they place emphasis on karma, conduct, and right faith over birth-based status.
