Key difference between shwetambar and pitambar

    11 months ago 1269

Shwetambar (Śvetāmbara) vs Digambar (often called Sky-clad) are the two main Jain traditions. A quick, clear difference:

    • Clothing of monks and nuns:
    - Śvetāmbara: Both monks and nuns wear simple white clothes. - Digambar: Traditionally, monks renounce all clothing (sky-clad); some sub-traditions may use minimal coverings, but the ideal is complete nudity.
    • Role of women and ordination:
    - Śvetāmbara: Women can become monks (bhikṣus) and bhikṣuṇīs; both genders have a strong monastic presence. - Digambar: Historically, stricter rules around monastic ordination for women; many lineages do not ordain women as monks in the same way as Śvetāmbara.
    • Scriptures and canons:
    - Śvetāmbara: Accept a broad set of canonical scriptures written by white-clad communities. - Digambar: Follow a different set of canonical texts and traditions; some Anga texts are treated differently.
    • Iconography and temple practice:
    - Śvetāmbara temples and idols often show clothes or symbolic drapery. - Digambar idols and temples emphasize renunciation and, in many depictions, nude or minimally adorned Tirthankaras.
    • Practical ritual and daily life:
    - Both share core Jain principles (ahimsa, anekantavada, aparigraha), but differ in liturgy, temple rituals, and everyday practices.

Note: “Pitambar” is not a standard term for the main split; the well-known contrast is Śvetāmbara (white-clad) vs Digambar (sky-clad). If you want, you can read a concise comparison here: You can read more here
