    Do you know about therapanth

    11 months ago 238

Terapanth is a Śvetāmbara Jain sect, founded in Rajasthan in the 18th century by Muni Bhikhanaji (who became Ācārya Bhikṣu). It arose when Bhikhanaji split from the Sthanakvāsin tradition and gathered 13 monks and 13 lay followers, giving rise to the name Terapanth (path of thirteen) and also to the idea “your path” (tera-panth) as coined by Bhikhu Bhikhanaji. The Terapanthi path is known for strict discipline, centralized leadership under a single Acharya, and a code of conduct built on thirteen core elements: five Mahāvratas, five Samitis, and three Guptis. They also emphasize non-idolatry, intensive meditation (prekṣā-dhyāna), and moral reform, including social upliftment. The system is designed to keep unity and uniform practice across the sangha through the Maryada Patra (Constitution) and annual Maryada Mahotsav. ( jainknowledge.com)

    Key features at a glance

    • Centralized leadership: one Acharya governs the entire Terapanth community.
    • Thirteen-fold code: five Mahavratas, five Samitis, three Guptis.
    • Non-idolatry, emphasis on meditation and ethical living.
    • Maryada Patra and annual Maryada Mahotsav to review and renew rules.
    • Notable modern activities: Prekṣā-Dhyāna (preksha meditation) and social/reform initiatives such as Anuvrat in later periods.

There is also a Digambara-related Terapantha group among some lay followers, but the best-known Terapanth lineage is the Śvetāmbara Terapanth led by Acharyas such as Mahāprajña and Mahāśramaṇa. ( jainpedia.org)
