Namorhat siddhacharya updahyay sarva sadhubhya is only recited by men why

    11 months ago 159

Namorhat Namaskara (Pancha Parmeshthi Namaskara) is a traditional invocation that pays respect to five sacred beings: Arihanta, Siddha, Acharya, Upādhyāya, and Sādhu/Sādhvi. In many Jain communities this sutra is recited by both men and women, especially as a preface to other prayers. However, the title Upādhyāya (teacher/preceptor) in this line is a role that has historically been associated with male lineages in several traditions. Because of this, some groups have perceived the sutra as male-associated when they read the line with the Upādhyāya in mind.

    • In short: the text itself honors both male and female holy ones (Arihanta, Siddha, Sādhu/Sādhvi), and many communities do recite this sutra by both men and women. The sense that it is “only for men” arises from how the Upādhyāya role is treated in certain traditions, not from a universal rule in Jainism. Tradition varies between Digambar and Śvetāmbara communities and by regional practice. You can read the Pancha Parmeshthi Namaskara Sutra text and its meaning here: Pancha Parmeshthi Namaskara Sutra. Additional note: If you want, I can share the exact wording as used in the tradition you follow (Digambar or Śvetāmbara) and explain how the Upādhyāya part is rendered in that lineage.
