Today I want to speak about the importance of a guru in our life, especially from the Jain perspective.

• A guru is a guiding light. In Jainism, the path of right belief, right knowledge, and right conduct is subtle and quiet. A true guru helps us see this path clearly, removes confusion, and shows us how to live with purity of thought, speech, and act.

• The guru is part of a sacred lineage. In Jain tradition, wisdom is handed down through a respected chain of teachers—Gandhadharas, Acharyas, and Upadhyayas. This lineage teaches us that spiritual progress is not something we achieve alone, but something we receive through careful guidance and discipline.

• The guru teaches practical discernment. They help us distinguish real inner progress from mere outward show. By listening to a guru, we learn to practice ahimsa (non-violence), satya (truth), asteya (non-stealing), brahmacharya (celibacy or moderation), and aparigraha (non-attachment) in everyday life.

• A guru mentors the journey of the soul, not just the mind. Jainism emphasizes self-realization and detachment from ego. A genuine guru encourages humility, self-inquiry, and steady inner effort, guiding us to inner peace and spiritual clarity.

• For householders and monks alike, the guru remains a steady anchor. Whether we are studying scriptures, observing vows, or serving others, the guru’s example—steadiness, compassion, and truth—helps us stay true to our vows and grow in spiritual maturity.

• Gratitude and service are essential. We show reverence to our guru through gratitude, sincere study, disciplined practice, and by sharing what we have learned with others. This respects the guru-shishya (teacher-student) relationship and strengthens our own path.

• Remember the ultimate purpose. The aim of following a guru is not to gain praise or power, but to purify the mind, reduce karmic bondage, and move closer to the pure state of the soul. A true guru helps us remember this purpose when distractions arise.

In conclusion, a guru in Jainism is not just a teacher of words but a guide who illuminates the path to right vision, right knowledge, and right conduct. By embracing their guidance with humility and steady effort, we honor the spiritual tradition and progress on the eternal journey of the soul.
