Aambil food recipie
Aambil is a simple, bland food typically consumed by Jains during Aayambil Tap (a special form of fasting). The key principle is extreme simplicity and austerity: the food must be free from taste enhancers, spices, oil, ghee, curd, milk, fruits, green/raw vegetables, and sweets. Only boiled grains, pulses, and a limited variety of vegetables (as per Jain rules) are allowed. No fried or fermented foods are used.
Here’s a basic Aambil meal recipe:
Aambil Khichdi (Plain Rice & Lentil Porridge)
Ingredients:
- 1 cup rice (washed thoroughly)
- ½ cup yellow moong dal (washed thoroughly)
- 4–5 cups water
- Rock salt (sendha namak, optional and as per rules)
- (No oil, no spices, no turmeric, no green vegetables, no tadka/tempering)
Instructions:
- Combine rice and moong dal in a heavy-bottomed pan.
- Add water and bring to a boil.
- Lower the flame and cook, stirring occasionally, until the mixture is very soft and overcooked.
- Add salt if allowed.
- Serve hot. Do not add any ghee, oil, or garnish.
Aambil Sabzi (Optional, if allowed):
- Use only root vegetables like bottle gourd (lauki/doodhi), pumpkin, or ridge gourd (as per Jain tradition and local rules).
- Peel and chop the vegetable.
- Boil in plenty of water with a pinch of sendha namak.
- No tempering, spices, or oil.
Aambil Roti:
- Knead wheat flour with plain water, no oil or salt.
- Roll into chapatis.
- Roast on a dry tawa (griddle) without oil or ghee.
Serving Suggestions:
- Serve with plain boiled dal water (without any tempering or spices), or just have the khichdi and boiled sabzi.
Note: Always follow your local Jain Sangh or family traditions, as rules may vary.
