    What is Muthi pachkhan

    one year ago 517

In Jainism, Muthi Pachkhan (also spelled Muthi Pachkhan or Mutthi Pachkhan) is a ritual of making a specific religious resolve (pachkhan) regarding the consumption of food. "Muthi" means "fistful" in Hindi/Gujarati, and "Pachkhan" means a vow or resolve.

Muthi Pachkhan is typically performed by lay followers (Shravaks and Shravikas) during fasting or when one wants to limit one's food intake as a spiritual practice. In this ritual, the devotee takes a vow to consume only a certain number of fistfuls of food (usually grains or rice) during a meal or for a specified period, such as a day.

    The process usually involves:

    1. Intention and Resolve: Before eating, the devotee makes a solemn resolve (pachkhan) in the presence of a Jain monk, nun, or in front of the Jain idols, stating the number of fistfuls of food they will consume.
    2. Measurement: During the meal, the food is measured by the devotee's fist (muthi), and only that amount is consumed.
    3. Spiritual Purpose: The purpose is to practice self-control, reduce attachment to food, and purify the mind and body, thus progressing on the path of spiritual development.

Muthi Pachkhan is one of the many types of vows or austerities (tapasyas) observed in Jainism to cultivate discipline, reduce desires, and accumulate spiritual merit (punya).
