Can people remember their past lives?
In Jainism, beings are reborn due to karma. For ordinary people, memories of past lives are not expected and are generally veiled by karma.
There are exceptions in Jain texts:
- The great enlightened beings (like the Tirthankaras) have kevala-jnana (omniscience) and remember all their past lifetimes.
- Some highly advanced yogis or liberated souls may remember past lives, but this is not something ordinary practitioners experience.
So, for most people, past-life memories are not a part of everyday spiritual practice. The path in Jainism emphasizes purifying karma and guiding the soul toward liberation rather than focusing on recalling past existences.
