Who is founder
In Jainism, the commonly cited founder/restorer of the current Jain dharma is Mahavira (also called Vardhamana Mahavira). He is regarded as the 24th Tirthankara and the most recent enlightened teacher who revitalized Jain principles.
However, there is a difference between traditions:
- Śvetāmbara tradition often regards Rishabhanatha (Adinath) as the first Tirthankara, with Mahavira as the 24th.
- Digambara tradition emphasizes Mahavira as the final and most important Tirthankara who revived and preached the Jain path in the present cycle.
If you’d like, I can explain how each tradition describes Mahavira’s teachings and his key contributions.
