Bhagwati Sutra (Vyākhyāprajñapti) is the fifth Anga in the Śvetāmbara Jain canon. It presents a huge Q&A dialogue in which Mahāvīra answers about many aspects of Jain doctrine and life. The text is said to contain about 36,000 questions and answers and is organized into 41 sections (shatakas). The topics cover: conduct and ethics for monks, the nature of the substances (dravyas), cosmology and geography, karma and rebirth, and various other Jain philosophy and day-to-day knowledge. It is known for its encyclopedic scope, weaving together metaphysics, cosmology, ethics, and social details through the Mahāvīra–Gautama dialogue. It is the most expansive and foundational of the traditional Jain Anga texts in the Śvetāmbara tradition. Digambara tradition treats canonical texts differently and does not assign the Bhagwati Sutra the same canonical status; the details of its inclusion differ between Śvetāmbara and Digambara canons.
