What are the jain gotras
Jain gotras are not a religious doctrine. They are social/ancestral lineages (clan names) used mainly by Jain lay communities to identify families and to guide marriage alliances (exogamy, i.e., marrying outside one’s gotra).
- In many Śvetāmbara Jain communities (e.g., Oswal, Porwal), there is a traditional list of 84 gotras often called the 84 gotras (chourasi gotra). These names come from ancient ancestral lines or places of origin. The exact list can vary between groups, and there is no single universal catalogue. ( jainknowledge.com)
- The concept of gotra in Jainism is primarily about lay community lineage and social organization, not a core doctrinal or philosophical element. Different Jain communities may have their own local gotra names. ( jainknowledge.com)
- Some pages note that there is no universally fixed number of gotras, and discussions often refer to 84 as the traditional reference for certain communities, while other groups may have different counts or lists. ( jainknowledge.com)
On Digambar vs. Śvetāmbara:
- Gotras discussed in the social context are generally a lay-community feature and can be present in both traditions, but the exact names and practices (e.g., which families are in which gotra) can differ by region and community. Monastic lineages are sometimes referred to as gaccha, but this is a separate concept from lay gotras.
