What is the status of women in Jainism? Are men considered superior?

    10 months ago 101

Here is a simple, traditional view from Jain dharma:

    • Core principle: In Jainism, the soul (jiva) has the same spiritual potential regardless of gender. Liberation (moksha) is about right faith, right knowledge, and right conduct, not about being male or female.
    • General difference between sects:
    - Shvetambar (white-clothes): It is widely taught in Shvetambar traditions that women can attain moksha in their present birth, through diligent practice and following the Jain path. - Digambar (sky-clothes): In classical Digambara teaching, it is traditionally stated that a woman must be reborn as a man to attain kevala jnana and moksha. There are also reformers and dialogue within Digambar communities that emphasize spiritual potential for women, but the traditional position remains that moksha is not achieved in a woman’s present body.
    • Practical upshot:
    - Women and men are equally capable of deep spiritual realization and ethical living. - The main differences you’ll hear are about canonical statements on moksha in one birth vs. the possibility of moksha within the current birth, which varies by tradition.
    • Important nuance:
    - Jain scriptures and teachers emphasize non-violence, aparigraha (non-attachment), truth, and compassion for all beings, regardless of gender. - There are many respected female lay practitioners and nuns who are celebrated for their spiritual discipline and learning.
