If on dewali prabhu mahaveer attained nirvaan, then last sermon must have started on trayodasi night?

    10 months ago 41

Short answer: No. The Mahāvillā (Mahāvīra) Nirvāṇa is traditionally observed on the fifteenth day of the Kartik month, and the last sermon (the final teachings) is described as having been delivered in the days leading up to that Nirvāṇa. Trayodāsi (the 13th day) is not regarded as the starting point of the last sermon.

    Important note:

    • There are small differences between Digambar and Śvetāmbara narrations about exact timings and details of Mahāvīra’s last teaching and the Nirvāṇa date, but neither tradition marks Trayodāsi as the starting night of the final sermon.
    • The common understanding in many calendars is that the Nirvāṇa occurs on Kartik Shukla (the bright half) on the 15th day, which is the occasion especially celebrated as Diwali in many Jain communities.

If you’d like, I can summarize the differences between Digambar and Śvetāmbara accounts in more detail and give you the traditional verses or stotras that describe Mahāvīra’s final teachings and his Nirvāṇa.
