Explain each part of utsarpini
Utsarpini is the ascending (progressing) half of the Jain Kalachakra, the wheel of time. Each half-cycle has six long sub-periods called arās. In Utsarpini, conditions gradually improve; after the sixth ara the cycle reverses into Avasarpini (the descending half). This structure is described in Jain texts and taught in Jain philosophy. The six arās of Utsarpini (ascending half) 1) Sukhama Sukhama (Utmost Happiness)
- What it means: complete happiness, no sorrow, longevity, abundance. Life is easy and virtuous; minimal needs.
- Key idea: from here, conditions steadily improve toward the peak of the cycle. ( jainknowledge.com)
2) Sukhama (Happiness)
- What it means: happiness continues but a little less than the first ara. Still very favorable conditions.
- Key idea: moral and spiritual climate remains uplifting. ( jainknowledge.com)
3) Sukhama Dukhama (Happy–Unhappy)
- What it means: a mixed period; happiness still predominates, but suffering begins to appear.
- Key idea: the balance starts shifting; virtuous life is still possible, yet challenges grow. ( jainknowledge.com)
4) Dukhamā Sukhama (Unhappy–Happy)
- What it means: another mixed period; suffering becomes more evident, though happiness remains present.
- Key idea: tension between ease and difficulty; spiritual effort remains meaningful. ( jainknowledge.com)
5) Dukhamā (Sorrow)
- What it means: mostly sorrow; hardships increase, and the moral climate declines.
- Key idea: spiritual progress requires greater effort; the era is nearing the turning point. ( jainknowledge.com)
6) Dukhamā Dukhamā (Utmost Sorrow)
- What it means: extreme misery; little happiness remains.
- Key idea: at the end of Utsarpini, conditions are at their lowest before the cycle reverses into Avasarpini. ( jainknowledge.com)
Important note
- The six arās occur in both halves of the Kalachakra, but the order of their progression is opposite between Utsarpini (ascending) and Avasarpini (descending). In Utsarpini we go from Sukhama Sukhama to Dukhamā Dukhamā; in Avasarpini the sequence moves from the opposite extreme back toward greater decline. This cyclical pattern is a core Jain cosmology.
