In Jainism, greed (lobha) is considered one of the main passions (kashayas) that cause bondage of the soul and lead to the cycle of birth and death (samsara). Greed is an intense desire for material possessions, wealth, or sensual pleasures. It binds the soul with karma and prevents spiritual progress.

Jain teachings emphasize overcoming greed through the practice of aparigraha (non-possessiveness or non-attachment). By limiting desires and possessions, and by cultivating contentment and generosity, one can reduce the influence of greed. Jain monks and nuns take vows of complete non-possession, while lay followers are encouraged to limit their attachments according to their circumstances.

Conquering greed leads to spiritual purity, inner peace, and ultimately liberation (moksha).
